set up an equation with x as the variable for the missing number

(28+32+21+22+x)/5 = 24.4

multiply both sides by 5

28+32+21+22+x = 5(24.4)

simplify (add and multiply)

103+x = 122

subtract 103 from both sides

x = 122-103

simplify

x = 19
