The answer is fossils. Uncovered fossils, well preserved in rock, show gradual and abrupt changes in species over time. These fossils, of some species that became extinct, have shown homologous and analogous features to other fossils and also existing species hence showing evolutionary relationships. Today, evidence of evolutionary relationship is being shown using molecular biology by comparing DNA sequences of ancient and existing species.
