Identification of a complex arrangement of sensory stimuli is known as object recognition or pattern recognition. Sensation involves the activation of our sensory system by incoming environmental stimulation, perception on the other hand is the process by which we use our previously held knowledge to interpret sensory information. Before we have a full blown perception of something, object recognition occurs.
