Honestly you could talk about any African american artist. this is not meant to be racist. just the fact that they started playing music (especially jazz) really affects today because now it is socially acceptable for anyone of any race or color to make music. it was a huge step in the right direction. some examples are Gwendolyn B. Bennett, langston huges, bill robison.
