reflecting is open ended statements repeating most of what the patient said, paraphrasing is repeating the patient in your own words and phrases, clarifying is making a statement less confusing and more understandable, productive silences give time to observe the patient as well as letting all involved gather their thoughts, and summarizing is to restate the key points of discussion and to reestablish complete understanding of the situation if necessary.
