REM sleep refers to a kind of sleep that occurs a few times every night. It involves rapid eye movements, deep sleep and dreaming. During REM sleep, procedural (non- declarative) memories are consolidated. Procedural memory refers to a kind of long-term memory of knowing how to follow procedures and do things like motor tasks. Knowing how to brush your teeth, drive your car and tie your shoelaces are types of procedural memories.
