Explain why the function f(x)=x^2 is not invertible

It doesn't pass the horizontal line test. (A function will be invertible if a horizontal line only crosses its graph in one place, for any location of that line.)


When you reflect the curve across the line y=x, it becomes multiple-valued, hence its inverse is not a function.
