The Tarasoff decision is important for mental health professionals. The Tarasoff case laid the foundation that a clinician has the responsibility to protect individuals who are being threatened with bodily harm, even if doing so breaks their confidentiality with a client. The judge who issued the decision wrote, "the protective privilege ends where public peril begins." The because the mental health professional has a duty both to the client, and to the person being threatened.
