794 through to 1868, the capital of Japan was Kyoto (京都). After 1868, the capital of Japan changed from Kyoto to Tokyo (東京). Traditionally, the Emperor and Empress of Japan live in the Japanese capital, so after the government made this change, the home of the Emperor and Empress was moved to Tokyo.
