remember: you can do ANYTHING to an equation as long as you do it to both sides

4x-9=11
add 9 to BOTH SIDES
4x+9-9=11+9
4x+0=20
4x=20
divide both sides by 4
(4x)/4=20/4
(4/4)x=5
1x=5
x=5
