Both came from very traditional families with limited economic conditions. They grew up in a very chaotic environment, which makes them look for easy and criminal ways to make a living. The difference between them is that Hickock does not follow the established plans and often does not have the courage to end murders, besides being someone who is friendly and inspires confidence. However, Smith appears to be a criminal completely willing to complete his plans, even if that includes cold-blooded murders.
