It is not known who actually wrote Beowulf, but scholars estimate through studying the Old English verse that is could have been written by someone in Britain in approximately the 8th century. They believe this person was a Christian; the author refers to the Christian world by adding Cain and the Flood, and portrays the influence of the Christian God on the Danes.
