Let the two numbers be x and y
xy = -400 . . . . . (1)
x + y = 10 . . . . .(2)
From (2), x = 10 - y . . . . . (3)
Putting (3) into (1), we have:
(10 - y)y = -400
10y - y^2 = -400
y^2 - 10y - 400 = 0
y = 5 + 5√17 and x = 5 - 5√17
