The African Iron Age began between 200 BC to 1000 CE when iron smelting practised in Africa. In Africa, the Iron Age is not advanced by a Bronze Age, but by metals brought together from other regions.

The earliest iron artefacts excavated by archaeologist were beads by the Egyptians which dated back to 5,000 years. It's estimated that from 200 BC, ironworkers spread iron throughout Africa especially, in eastern and southern Africa.
