They act to increase the basal metabolic rate, affect protein synthesis, help regulate long bone growth, and increase the body's sensitivity to catecholamines - hormones made by your adrenal glands, which are located on top of your kidneys - by permissiveness (great or excessive freedom of behaviour.)
