The speaker feels as though he is a slave to his beloved because of his love. The poem begins with the lines, "Being your slave, what should I do but tend
/Upon the hours and times of your desire?". In these lines the speaker reveals that his is the slave waiting to tend to his beloved whenever he is needed.
