It varies from different cilvilaztions but usually it would be slaves. In fact, in some you could sell yourself or your children into slavery!

They were born into peasants and will always be peasants and they were treated poorly. They had to beg for food. They couldn't have jobs that they wanted even if they were very skilled at it
